
Auburn Educational Workshop Series
The Auburn School is pleased to offer a workshop series that is open to the public. Our workshop series provides a wide range of programs that allow participants to learn about and discuss current best practices and research-based strategies for teaching, learning and parenting.
All workshops offered during the 2009-2010 school year are free and will be presented by Auburn staff.

I. Thursday, November 19th 2009 at 7:30 pm:
Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Characteristics and Evidence-Based Teaching Strategies
This workshop is designed for family members, friends, and community members who wish to learn about the characteristics of Asperger's Syndrome and other autism spectrum disorders. Discussion topics include: criteria for diagnosis, possible symptoms, and common co-existing conditions. Some of the effective teaching strategies employed by The Auburn School will also be introduced.
II. Thursday, January 21st 2010 at 7:30 pm:
Facilitating Independence at Home for Children with ASD
This workshop will introduce family members, friends, and babysitters to strategies that can help promote independence at home for students with ASD. Activities such as homework, chores, and other common daily routines will be covered.
III. Thursday, March 18th 2010 at 7:30 pm:
Sibling Survival: A Workshop for Brothers and Sisters of a Child with ASD
This workshop is appropriate for children ages 6 to 18 who have a sibling with autism spectrum disorder. Participants will learn about the positive aspects of having a sibling with ASD, as well as how to manage frustrations that may occur. Topics to be introduced include: ways to be supportive, improving communication, and having fun together.
IV. Thursday, May 20th 2010 at 7:30 pm:
Related Services: The Role of Occupational Therapists, Speech/Language Pathologists, and Social Workers with Students on the Autism Spectrum
This workshop will explain some of the ways in which occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, and social workers may provide support for students with ASD, both at home and at school. Each of the Auburn therapists will discuss strategies they have used to effectively help students inprove in areas such as pragmatic language, social skills, and organization.
